At the Foot of the Fall
Hiking to the very top of High Force
To know in flushed hearts a wonder unfeigned,
To witness the Tees plunge in its long course,
Here then amongst rushing waters unchained
Is the beauty that made us scale steep dale
To win this sight of crust straining skyward
And the self-carving bride’s cascading veil.
Here we heard the river as it roared
And we agreed that yes this was sublime
But I had a secret I did not share:
I could have known splendour without the climb,
I saw danger magic and truth elsewhere,
I saw it at the foot of the great fall
In your iris beauty above it all.
